Efficacy of Neem Seed Oil and Khaya senegalensis Bark Extracts on Afrormorsia laxiflora Wood Species Exposed to Termites Infestation

This study assessed the effectiveness of neem seed oil (NSO) and Khaya senegalensis bark extracts as bio-insecticides for preserving Afrormosia laxiflora wood against termite infestation. Conducted at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Nigeria, the research involved collecting wood samples from Kara Market and extracting bioactive materials from the plants. A non-pressurized brushing method applied four treatments: five samples each of neem seed oil, Khaya senegalensis extract, a synergistic mix, and untreated controls, all replicated five times in a complete randomized design (CRD).The treated samples were exposed to termite attack for 12 weeks, with assessments every two weeks. Results showed significant differences among treatments (P<0.05). Neem seed oil had the lowest mean weight loss of 423.40 g (±34.14), followed by Khaya senegalensis at 394.00 g (±60.27), and the synergistic treatment (AC1) at 367.00 g (±57.98). The untreated control (ACo) recorded the highest loss of 132.80 g (±20.50). Visual assessments confirmed that both neem seed oil and Khaya senegalensis significantly reduced weight loss compared to controls. This study highlights the potential of these plant-derived extracts as effective, environmentally friendly alternatives for wood preservation and sustainable pest management.
