Abstract

Ethanol and aqueous extract were screened for their phytochemical and antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi, Escherichia Coli and Pseudomona aeruginosa.  The result indicated that flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycosides, saponins and terpenoids were present in both the extract but alkaloids and reducing sugar is present only in the aqueous extract. Anthraquinone is present only in the ethanolic extract while the steroid is absent in both the extracts. The result of the antibacterial showed MIC value ranging from 250 – 500 μg while for MBC 500 – 2000μg the result of antibacterial of the bark of Ficus Sycomorous showed good activity against the tested bacteria but ethanolic extract showed less activity compared to the aqueous extract. The results from the activity of the bark of Ficus Sycomorous suggest that it can be used for the treatment of diseases caused by these bacteria.
