Abstract

Abstract
In this current study, natural bio polymer chitosan was prepared with locally available desert locust (S. gregaria) exoskeleton. Adsorption of iron and zinc by chitosan was then studied. Isolation of chitosan involved three main stages, includes demineralization, deprotenization and deacetylation. Chitosan was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both characterization techniques confirm the existence of chitosan. The affinity of chitosan for Iron and Zinc was studied using FeSO4and ZnCl2 solutions as the heavy metal solution containing Fe (II) and Zn (II) ions. Adsorptions of iron and zinc ions by chitosan were investigated under different conditions. The effect of adsorbent dose and contact time were studied. The Amount of iron and zinc adsorbed under different conditions was evaluated using atomic adsorption spectroscopy.
